Painting kitchen countertops

Okay so you want to remodel your kitchen countertops, but do not have enough money to buy new countertops. Solution, paint them.

I did mine about a month ago, and boy am I happy with the results.

Your first step is to clean them thoroughly with TSP. I used TSP PF (Phosphate Free).

Second: Sand them I recommend sanding them with a medium fine to medium grit sand paper. I used this sanding solution that was applied to the countertop but it did not work that well. I would up sanding them.

Third: Wash them down to remove the dust from the countertop.

Fourth: Paint them. You have to have a base coat for the other paints to adhere to. (I used rustoleum ivory, beige)

Fifth: Using a sponge take your accent colors and sponge them on. I used a hand held sponge, but my fingers got pretty painted, I saw that they sell the sponge on a roller.

Sixth: Use a variety of colors , you want to create the effect of marble. What I did was I picked up samples of formica countertops from home depot. You know, the kind that look like you can hang them off of a keychain. Buy the colors that are on there and create that effect when you start sponging.

Let each coat dry for the require length of time stated on the paint you purchased.

Next, lightly sand the finished painted countertops with a fine grit 000 steel wool.

Wash off the dust, paint with a good polyurethane, I used a polyurethane that is used for wood decks. Preparing food on my countertops has never been a problem for me in my other home I had formica countertops and never prepared food directly on them. I always use a cutting board or a plate or something like that.

Sand again, poly again. The drying time between each polyurethane coat is about eight hours, I let mine dry overnight.

It is recommended that you put about five coats on. You do not sand after the last coat.

There you have it. Beautiful countertops, that will impress your friends and family.

I love mine.
